We returned to San Miguel Tecuanipa at the beginning of the new year on January 2nd, accompanied by Carla and Gabriela along with the engineers Javier and Óscar, and Gaby from Fundación VeracruzANA.

First, we stopped to see Don Tobías property. We were excited to see traces of his new home. Don Tobías and his niece were very happy and grateful for the support we were giving them; they never imagined our aid would come so soon. They re-told us the story of the earthquake; there continues to be a need felt by the people to share their experience. We were able to learn a bit more about their family. Carmen has five children: the eldest is 18 years old, the youngest is barely 6 months old and was a newborn when the earthquake hit.

The entire family dedicates themselves to working in the field, including Carmen, who in the meantime stays home to care for her baby José Ángel and her uncle Don Tobías.

After conversing with the family, the engineers began to explain the distribution of the home, given the tracks they have marked in the ground. A few moments later, Carmen, Tobías, and Ana place the symbolic first stone to begin the constructing the foundation.

We were all very happy; with tears, good wishes, and a bag of avocados, Carmen and Tobías bid us farewell.

Next, we paid another visit to Eloy. We were thrilled to see that they had already moved into their home; the place was nicely decorated with Christmas decorations and a beautiful nativity scene. It is amazing to see how even after tremendous hardships, people continue to hold on to their faith and their traditions. Blanca and little Lizbeth were also there; they informed us that it appears to be that the baby most likely has hip problems.

We continued along with our travel; our next stop was with Don Víctor and his family once more. Today, we were in luck for we met the family we had yet to meet; Gabriel and Benito, the two eldest sons of Víctor and Carolina, were on their break from their work on the reconstruction of their school; it, too, was destroyed in the earthquake.

They invite us in and we are very surprised to see that the one of the walls that had been damaged was now fixed with the aid they received from SEDESOL. However, they were only able to repair one wall, for SEDESOL did not believe their home was a total loss, when in reality, it is inhabitable.

As we’re there, they tell us a bit more of how they live day by day, how the distribution within the house is set up and how they adjust to being in a tent lent to them while their home is being rebuilt. A bit later, one of the children shows up with the “little refreshment,” which refers to beer; this is the way in which they refer to beer in San Miguel, which made all of us laugh. Sitting on our stools, we form a circle in one of the abandoned rooms that was damaged after the earthquake, and one by one, they each start to recount their experience during the earthquake. We leave once we finish our refreshments. On our travel back to Puebla, after conversing with the engineers, we decided that Don Víctor’s family would be the next family we would help.

Volvimos a San Miguel Tecuanipa recién empezando el año, el 2 de enero Ana hizo su segunda visita acompañada nuevamente de Carla y Gabriel, y además los ingenieros Javier y Óscar de la constructora y Gaby de Fundación VeracruzANA.

Primero llegamos con Don Tobías a ver su terreno, nos emocionamos mucho al ver ya los trazos para su nueva casa, él y su sobrina Carmen estaban muy contentos y agradecidos que los estuviéramos apoyando, y jamás pensaron que sería tan rápido. Nos contaron de nuevo la historia del terremoto, la gente sin duda sigue teniendo la necesidad de expresar lo que vivieron ese día, pudimos también conocer un poco más sobre la familia, Carmen tiene 5 hijos la mayor de 18 y el pequeño tiene apenas 6 meses, estaba recién nacido cuando sucedió el terremoto.

Toda la familia se dedica al campo, incluso la misma Carmen quien por ahora tiene que quedarse a cuidar a su bebé José Ángel y a su tío Tobías,

Después de platicar con ellos, los ingenieros nos explican la distribución de la casa según lo que ya trazaron y unos momentos después Tobías, Carmen y Ana hacen la colocación simbólica de la primera piedra para que ya puedan empezar a trabajar los cimientos de la construcción.

Estuvimos muy contentos y entre lágrimas, buenos deseos y nuevamente una bolsa de aguacates Tobías y Carmen nos despidieron.

Después fuimos a visitar a Eloy nuevamente, nos encantó ver que ya estaban habitando su casa y estaba toda adornada de navidad, con un nacimiento hermoso; es increíble ver como a pesar del golpe de la naturaleza la gente no pierde la fe y sigue fiel a sus tradiciones, ahí estaba también Blanca con la pequeña Lizbeth, nos cuentan que al parecer la bebé tiene un problemita en su cadera.

Seguimos con nuestro recorrido y llegamos a casa de Don Víctor y su familia nuevamente, ahora tuvimos suerte y nos tocó conocer al resto de los integrantes de la familia, están Gabriel y Benito los dos hijos hombres más grandes de Víctor y Carolina, están tomando un descanso pues trabajan en la reconstrucción de la escuela que también se cayó con el sismo.

Nos invitan a pasar y nos sorprendemos mucho al ver que ya reconstruyeron el muro de uno de los cuartos con el apoyo parcial que recibieron de SEDESOL, sin embargo solo alcanzó para un muro, pues no les consideraron pérdida total aunque su casa quedó totalmente inhabitable.

Nos cuentan un poco más sobre como viven, como es la distribución en cada cuarto de la casa y cómo se acomodan ahora en una carpa que les donaron mientras buscan que los apoyen con la reconstrucción de la casa, al poco rato de estar con ellos uno de sus hijos llegó con “el refresquito”, así te ofrecen la cerveza en San Miguel lo cual nos causó mucha gracia; hicimos una rueda sentados en bancos en uno de los cuartos que tiene ahora vacíos pues está dañado y uno a uno nos van contando como fue su experiencia en el sismo. Al terminarnos el refresco nos marchamos, y en el camino de regreso a Puebla al ir platicando con los ingenieros decidimos que la familia de Don Víctor sería la siguiente que apoyaríamos.
